There is a distinction made by Dell between a 'port replicator' and a 'docking
station'.
A 'port replicator' makes it easier to disconnect the laptop from local
cables. Local cables are connected are made to the port replicator, and the
laptop is connected to the port replicator.
A 'docking station' can perform the same function, but also may have
additional capabilities including additional PCI slots, or a local NIC card.
The port replicator is a cheaper alternative, and just simplifies wiring, so
is not visible to linux.
The docking station makes additional features available, but I have not seen a
recent one.
