port replicators and linux

In my experience, a "port replicator" is just a connector panel -- the
port electronics are within the laptop and are there regardless, but there
is no connector for the extra ports on the laptop itself.  So there's no
software issue; to the software, it looks like those ports are always
there. 

That said, my experience is limited, and heaven knows what perversities
might be found in some laptops...
