port replicators and linux

Hello there.

I've done the prerequiste google search, and I still have a few
questions about port replicators or docking stations and its
compatability with linux. I don't know anyone with a port replicator,
so I am asking the list.

(1) The port replicators available for my laptop has a many more ports
than my laptop (ps/2 ports, serial ports, etc). Does this mean that
these extra ports will work, or should I expect only the ports on my
laptop to work? (I guess I am asking whether a port replicator is a
port expander.)

(2) Is anyone familiar with linux support for port replicators?
