On my gentoo system I added this to /etc/fstab

/dev/sda1   /mnt/sda1  auto  noauto,user,rw,async,noatime,umask=0077      0 0

Works every time. USB stick of many different types, mp3 players, digital 
cameras. Long filenames work too.
