Well you might need a newer kernel if the kernel doesn't support the
hardware in the box (which is of course very likely given how ancient
redhat 9 is by now.)

However once you have a kernel that supports the hardware in the
machine, any x86 software will run fine and very fast.

if you want to take full advantage of the machine, you want to look at a
64bit x86_64 distribution instead.  At least on the AMD.
