No, no, he's entirely right.
If the point of the exercise is to "squeeze every clock cycle out of
your new box," there are few things that can conceivably be more
successful at consuming trillions of clock cycles than running GCC
over and over again hundreds of thousands of times in the course of
recompiling all the software with whatever optimization options you
imagine might be helpful.
