I think it did; ssh'ing in from another machine (since X was locked)
showed that the font rendering engine was a) eating most of core and b)
using 99% CPU. I hope that font handling is a bit smarter in newer
versions of X, but the OP's response that the machine seemed to pause
every now and then might make me think otherwise.
