As always with Linux there are numerous ways to do things.
I use the following prompt:
PS1="\n[\u]\033[7;36m\]:\t [\w]\033[0m\]\n\\$"
This gives me the full path, the time, and the $ at the end recognizes root or 
user. it also starts the prompt enter point at the next line.
Works just fine for me! But each to his own :-)
