try to bypass that at boot up - thus in your boot loader
put in the word "single" if your using grub or lilo the boot screen
should tell you how to edit the boot parms, and you just want stick in the word
"single" (without the double quotes around it)
this should at least get you booted to a shell.
You might also have "FailSafe" as an option in Grub, and if its an old linux,
maybe you might have to start it with "linux 3" or "linux 1" on lilo.

if the message "initializing hardware" is part to the main kernel messages
before it hands off to init and then to rc.d service then you
probably need to boot from a "save disk" or a "linux on cd/dvd boot disk"
and then look at replacing your kernel and/or initrd file.

you might also want to see if your bios was effected, and if you had special
bios setting for your OS, i.e. plug-and-pray, or LBA (for disk), etc, etc.
But i sonund to me like "initializing hardware" (when i google)
it is usually accompanied by something like fb0: initializing hardware ,
or something more specific to a particular device?
