Slow response to SSH from within network?

SSH cycles through all name services configured in nsswitch.conf using
gethostbyname().

The 10 second delay is usually because it is waiting for a response from a
name service like dns.

A quick resolution is to ensure that there is an entry in your dns for the
ssh client.

Subject: [TLUG]: Slow response to SSH from within network?

I have been setting up a second machine on my network, headless, and so
I log into it via ssh pretty often. I notice that there seems to be a
ten second delay before offering a prompt. I notice this if I log back
into the first (with a head) machine from the new machine, too. So I
have to assume that this is a behaviour rather than a weird glitch, and
it makes some sense.

However, I still want to turn it off :-) Anyone know how to get ssh to
answer the first ring?  Thanks.
