Installing on an external hard drive

While you are installing to the usb hard drive, just remove the other 
devices for the duration of the install.

http://simonf.com/usb/ should do the trick for any problems with booting 
from USB. You may have to build a custon initrd. Not sure how Mandriva 
does things.
