It depends on your Linux distro.  For instance, RHES-3 has poor SATA 
support in
the kernel it comes with.  I had to compile one by myself for a server 
with SiI
3112a based controller on-board.  Distributions with newer kernels (after
2.4.21) shouldn't have this problem.
