This is a style issue, similar to email vs. e-mail.  Ordinarily I would
send you to the magazine web site to look at the style guide for
writers, but that page
(http://www.linuxjournal.com/xstatic/author/authguide) is given over to
issues of what they will publish, not how.  You have two choices - email
Don Marti from that page and ask, or simply choose a convention and use
it - if an editor doesn't like you convention they will change it, but
thank you for your consistency.
