Avast Antivirus works extremely well for those who are stuck in a windows
environment.
There is a free home edition here
http://avast.com/eng/down_home.html
Download & install then register for a free home-user serial.
This outperforms most retail AV programs out there ( ie norton ), and is OK
for new users to grasp.
