The man page is out of date.  sync has effect on vfat as well, and that
is unfortunate for those with usb flash drives since the sync option
will seriously hurt the life time of those drives.  sync makes the
access much slower when writing and is very bad for flash media.  Not
bad for magnetic disks just slow.
