Asa a first attempt, try the Google Maps Pedometer: 
<http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/>. It's surprising accurate (if 
used correctly). I was within a few metres for a route I know to be 1089m.

I think the Google Maps API might make this very simple.
