I understand that it's one of those rules that one *never* plugs a
printer into a UPS because printers play havok with power quality on
that line.

I didn't realise there were dedicated printer plugs on UPS' these
days.  For sure they'd be bypassing the battery.

A line conditioning UPS for the modem would solve the problem to be
sure..  then again, if there are issues like that, a line conditioning
UPS for everything would be a good idea.  I'd hate to be your
computer.. getting noisy power like that.
