Maybe take another look at OpenOffice.org.  They've added Base to it's
suite (OOo v2).  It's designed to be used much like access from what I
understand.  http://dba.openoffice.org/

I'm not sure when the release date for OOo 2 is, but has been featured
in a couple magazines.  A preview copy came on the coverdisc with a
recent issue of LinuxFormat.


(Also, for ease of development, SQLite is my all-time favorite.  An
embeddable engine, usable from a wide range of languages.
