Thunderbirds are STOP !

So there I was, starting up mozilla-thunderbird (1.0.2) on my ubuntufied
thinkpad. logging into sympatico..good.. 92 new messages .. WOW .. no
impossible, though .. opening mailing-list folder .. spinning .. 100%
cpu ! hmmm spinning spinning spinning .. she's out of control captain !
I can't hold her any longer !!
I tried closing thunderbird but nooooo ! thunderbird not responding ! I
closed her up (losing changes) started 'er again, ok, I can read other
folders fine.. but tried the mailing-list folder .. 100%CPU .. spinning
.. spinning .. damn ! I tried opening the mbox in gedit ..whoosh ! all
system resources used ! It opened fine in vim, though..
    Any ideas what might have happened or how to address it ?
