Personally I got rid of my landline ages ago and use a Fido cell phone with
the pay-as-you-go card refill option.

As a not very heavy telephone user, this suits me just fine.

It would probably not be ideal for a family situation, but it is great for a
single person who has a broadband connection to the internet.

Several of my acquaintances use the same strategy. The economics are great too.
