That would update the signature file once per login as opposed to once
per email, wouldn't it?

A slightly more fine-tuned rate might be had by setting an entry in
your crontab to update the signature file say twice an hour (using the
above command ;)  Still wouldn't be every message, but a little closer
than once per session.
