Finding the system's log path

Hi all,

I hope this isn't too obvious a question but is there a system
variable, or some other method, to find what the system's log directory?
I know that the vast majority of *nix systems use '/log' but is there a
way to be sure? I know this isn't it but something like reading the
shell value 'LOG' or 'LOG_DIR'?

Thanks!

Madison
