Weird and Sudden permissions problem

Hi all,

   Just now I was listening to my music in xmms (mixed ogg and mp3) and 
when I went to switch songs and it suddenly started scrolling like it 
could no longer find the files. I verified that I had xmms-mp3 installed 
and tried removing and re-adding the songs but it wouldn't add anything. 
So, I poped open a shell to take a look. Everything -seemed- okay (all 
files owned by my user and globally readable anyway) but alas, no help.

   Here is what happens:

   Notice that the ownerships are all okay? Despite that as a user I 
can't get into the directory! I tried logging out and back in and then 
(gasp!) even rebooted to no effect.

   Now I tried chowning all the files to root and leaving the global 
readable flag and as root the changes took but when I switch back to the 
user the new ownership isn't seen. See:

  Has anyone seen this before?

PS - When I launch xmms as root I can load and listen to all of my music 
just fine.
