problem compiling kernel

What's the patch that you mentioned supposed to do?  There might be a
native 2.6 alternative.

Hmmm I'm not sure how safe it is to apply patches from different kernel
versions, especially across revision numbers.  It seems that the mixture
of 2.4 module code with the 2.6 kernel code is the likely culprit.
