Hi William,

I have no complaints about my Asus P4P800 board. I also like the fact
that Asus provides open source Linux drivers for (in my case) the
network card and the sound chip. Although both drivers are not in the
2.6 kernel, it is still good to know the drivers are being supported by
the hardware manufacturer (and actually included on the product CD). I
would support people who actually care about Linux.

In reality, if you can find out the exact models of all the
components/chips of a motherboard (i.e. south bridge, sound, network,
USB, IEEE1394/Firewire/I-Link, etc.), you can find out if it will be
compatible with Linux. You can also take a look at VIA boards. They have
a linux support section on their site (although one must dig to get
there). However, I have had a VIA board die on me after 13 months, so I
am not sure of the reliability. As far as compatibility, any recent
board that is based on Intel of VIA chipsets should be supported.

As far as reliability goes, you get what you pay for. Asus boards seem
to be the most expensive, so probably use good components. Make sure you
also get a good power supply to keep the system stable. Go for at least
350 watts with a modern PIII or PIV.

May I inquire what the machine will be used for, and what type/speed of
processor you plan on getting. Maybe someone will be able to give more
concrete advice / module numbers then.
