printers + cups = blank pages

I am trying to migrate my desktop over to linux and I am having a
problem with printing.

My printer is an HP 1200. I have it connected to a Netgear FR114P
printserver. 

I installed CUPS and foomatic on my linux box and ran the web interface
to cups to set up the printer. 

When I print a test page the printer "prints" blank pages. 

I had a look at linuxprinting.org but couldn't find what I was doing
wrong. I am using the pxlmono driver as per the instructions.
