As a follow up I used the command exactly as above ( no >> ) with 77 files and 
it performed correctly without a hitch.
For those of you who are interested in why I did it:
The collection of 77 files is a collection of chess games. I wanted them in 
one file, so that I could use them with "xboard"  to play them selectively 
from one list. Works great!
