What version of slrn? From what I understand slrn 9.8.0 has UTF-8
support if one installs the proper slang lib. On debian one has the choice
to install vanilla slang or slang-UTF-8.

With mutt working fine for this, is it compiled using ncurses or slang?

Probably ncurses...
