I don't believe it's built in, but available through a patch...

Never used it, I prefer using slrn for my newsreading, but I do use mutt
for my e-mail. :) I've tried most of the major GUI news/e-mail clients
on Linux, and still find that I always end up back with mutt/slrn.

Like another said, the power is the configuration flexibility and being 
able to use these clients remotely through ssh. I've used both this way, 
many times.
