Inserting devices in a USB port

There should be no problem.  I believe the USB specifications are
completely hot-plugable.  The only question is whether Linux has the
hotplug support to detect the change and load the appropriate module.
But as long as you unmount the flash memory or correctly undock the Palm
Pilot, there should be no problem.
