The method of comparing costs needs to be carefully thought out.  My favorite 
ad (might be the same one you're talking about) is that dollar-for-dollar 
Windows outperforms Linux 10:1.

The ad was  comparing Windows on a dual Xeon to Linux on a dual Z900 (CPU 
might be wrong but it was a mainframe).  The comparison is completely 
irrelevant, why did they not compare Linux and Windows on the same 
hardware???

It's sad but I believe that most people just buy whatever is shovelled to them 
through the media, witness the recent election ;-)
