Toronto + Linux + Wireless

Hi all,

This is a bit off topic, but I'm hoping it may catch some peoples interest:

After reading an old Slasdot article about flashing wireless Linksys routers
with enhanced Linux firmware
(http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/05/28/1249235&mode=thread&tid=106&tid
=137&tid=185&tid=193&tid=215) I decided to buy one (WRT54G is $119@ PC
Village or $115 at Canada Computers).

I have no intention of creating my own public VoIP network, or being a
subcontracted ISP. What I'm interested in is using that magical little Linux
box to start creating a wireless neighbourhood network. Ideally to create a
little mesh of local computers where they may all connect by hopping packets
through each other. Security/scalability concerns aside for now (since I
have nothing working yet)... has anybody else done this in the GTA?

I'm in the Yonge + Eglinton area, which is fairly dense with apartments (and
ideal elevated line-of-site for 802.11). My most recent posts on the board
for my street are getting eaten
(http://www.erski.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=6) ....but a quick survey out my
window showed there must be interest in the technology in the area
(http://192.168.0.1:88/erskine_access_points.jpg)

So, if you're in my area, or have advice about Linux+wireless gear, or have
created your own wireless neighbourhood network I'd be very happy to hear
from you.

Thanks!
