sound issue

For some reason, I don't appear to be able to change to volume on my
system.  Previously, I was able to change the volume of most of my
applications via xmms.  Now, I can't change the volume on anything with
xmms, or xine or anything I can find.  Do I know what's changed?  No,
that would be useful - sorry.  Any thoughts?
