It's worse because nobody can force your IE to go to a suspect page (at least 
on a non-trojaned machine) but anyone can send you spam that loads and 
"executes" suspect HTML (Outlook uses IE for rendering).

Not a Windows user so I can't say for sure.  You could try out 
mozilla-thunderbird for email, there's also eudora (I'm pretty sure a free 
version exists).
