OK. I read the whole thing, followed the steps to...
* boot to knoppix live CD
* download knx-templates-0.39.tgz (which don't seem to get installed in
this guy's ten steps)
* install knoppix to hd (sudo ./knoppix-installer)
* download module-init-tools_3.1-pre5-1_i386.deb (since his suggested
module-init-tools_3.0-pre-1_i386.deb was not at the site indicated)
* run sudo chroot /mnt/hda6/ /sbin/lilo -v
* reboot to 'linux' (as his suggested LinuxOLD was not a choice)
* drop to console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) as KDE loads
* su
* cd /boot
* mkinitrd -o linux-2.6.1.gz (this, ironically, as you'll soon see is
supposed to "make an initrd image that WON'T cause a kernel panic")
* vi /etc/lilo.conf to change 'initrd=/boot/initrd.gz' (mine was
actually something more like 'initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.5') to
'initrd=/boot/linux-2.6.1.gz'
* update lilo with /sbin/lilo -v
* install module-init-tools (perhaps the wrong one) with dpkg -i
module-init-tools_3.1-pre5-1_i386.deb
* su
* vi /etc/fstab to add the line, none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
* :wq
* reboot
* choose 'linux 2.6
and I got a lot of errors, the last being,
umount: devfs : not mounted
pivot_root : No such file or directory
/sbin/init : 418 : cannot open dev/ console : No such file
Kernel panic : Attempted to kill init
I didn't want to be a slacker so I followed all the steps -- didn't work
for me. What am I after here, John - the 2.6 kernel or the
module-init-tools?
Chris
