The only way I know how to "Configure" ppp is to recreate the connection
in kppp -- I've done that several times. I'm wondering if somehow it's
using the wrong default gateway or somesuch -- but how would that info
that I chose for eth0 affect ppp0 (or whatever device the dial-up
connection is) -- they should be two different devices.

John, this is a hard disk installation of knoppix. The connection I
created has persisted through several reboots (as it is a hard disk
installation -- not running live off the CD). It's only yesterday after
configuring eth0 that the problem started.
