Here is an untested suggestion:

Instead of calling 'firefox -remote "openURL(...)"' try using the
'mozilla-remote-client' or 'mozilla-firefox-remote-client' found in the
firefox installation directory such as:

'mozilla-remote-client "openURL(...)"'

Like I said, I haven't tried it, but it may work. By the way, it looks
like mozilla.org are aware of this bug; I don't remember the # though.
