SCSI tape drive problem

If these are DAT drives (DDS) then how many times have you written those
tapes, and as someone else already said, when did you last clean the
drive.

Helical scan tape drives put a lot of wear on the head and the tape, and
do need regular cleaning and new tapes fairly frequently to work
reliably.
