Because it was trendy, of course.

Never mind the fact that the real Velociraptor was about the size of a
chicken...!  (Crichton got it wrong in his novel -- probably because his
reference was one particular dinosaur book that confused two dinosaurs of
similar appearance but rather different sizes -- and the movies copied his
mistake.)
