How to make Spam Assassin work?

Hi,
I've had spamassassin setup for a few months now and I train it with about 50
emails per day. The level is at 1 and it doesn't get any spam.
Recently it recognizes 1-3 emails per day but half the time it's good email
(mostly TLUG!!). 
I hear spamassassin is really cool but for me the only good thing it does so far
is making use of all the spam (now I can use them for training!).
Anything I'm doing wrong?
