That's what I heard too, basically you could fit a whole movie onto one
VHS tape while it took 2 beta tapes. I think later on beta tapes where
able to do this, but by then VHS had taken the lead. Also, Sony didn't
licence the Beta format while JVC did.
This article is the first time I've ever heard anyone say VHS was an
European invention. Perhaps the writer though it would make China's move
sound more sinister to an American audience? :)
It's more common to mix-up beta (the home VCR format) with beta tapes
(still?) used in the broadcast industry.
