I've tried autoconf first, as well as your suggestion. I now have all
the devel libs installed that are necessary, and I do have a
/usr/lib/pkgconfig...but still the same error.

I know I can just install the RPM, but now it's personal... ;-)

does it matter the order in which I do the "export" and "autoconf"?
