Mounting hard drive; Hello, where are you?

It has been a while but I took french immersion from grade 1 through 10. 
:) Anywho, I tried:

[root at hannah hdc]# sfdisk /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc: Input/output error

sfdisk: cannot open /dev/hdc read-write
[root at hannah hdc]#
