Does it have to be external?  If so, it probably is worth it.  I have
had nothing but great experience with the Asus burners I have bought.

There is also the option of this:

USB2.0 5-1/4" ATAPI case: $65
Asus 52x CD-RW:           $79
Total:                   $144

That's by getting parts in the Toronto area.
