SMC 1255TX with Kernel 2.4.22

What motherboard?  Can you show us the complete output of lspci?

I've had cards that wouldn't work with 2.4, in a few cases passing the kernel 
the noapic option has made the cards work (the cards were all onboard 8139s 
IIRC).
