Actually, I found a *really* easy way to accomplish what I wanted here:

There are various methods, I used the PHP code to do it, a simple
redirect to a page which is very polite and I hope non-condescending.

In the end, my site gets less traffic than a dead end, so it's a mighty
small protest, but I guess you gotta start somewhere, no?
