One trick that can be useful is to reconfigure the syslog subsystem to do
remote logging.  It sometimes happens that there *were* relevant log
entries made, but they didn't make it out to disk before the system died. 
You can sometimes reduce loss of last-minute log messages by sending them
to another machine instead.
