what does it say in xserverrc, and is it executable?

one thing you can do to override that config file is to create a file in
your home dir called .xinitrc, and in there put the window manager or
desktop you want to start, for example:

exex gnome-session

or

exec blackbox

depending on what you have installed and how light or heavy you want
your desktop to be.

again, make sure it is executable by:

chmod +x .xinitrc
