Debian-newbie questions

  Hopefully I'll outgrow this status in few weeks.  Questions...

1) Help... No X-Windowing!  The startx command gets a response...
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc: /usr/bin/X11/X: no such file or directory
The config file is there, but no X.

2) What is the command for starting/stopping services that's equivalant
to Redhat's "service iptables start" or "service syslog stop", etc ?
