I imagine what happened here is that the original person who complained has a
mail client that turns ":)" into a graphic and though that it was being sent
that way (as a graphic) in HTML by the sender. I know Mozilla Thunderbird
does this "out of the box" and I had to explicitly shut off this behaviour in
Tools->Options->Display->Display emoticons as graphics.
